Historia
As the strength of the sun wanes at the winter solstice, Hana Matsuri is a call to revitalize the fading life force of the earth. With roots in the 14th century, it's thought to have been spread by trainee monks in the local mountains. Today the festival is held in ten neighborhoods in Toei Town, Aichi prefecture between November and January. The historic festival includes fierce stamping to awaken spirits in the earth, and figurative monsters known as 'oni' breathe new life into people. A bubbling cauldron of sacred water is a symbol of overflowing vitality. Once carried out on an epic scale of seven days and seven nights, the rites have evolved into a festival of restoration that brings good health and abundant harvests still celebrated today.
